George Michael Show

My Discovery

  • Saw WHAM! On Entertainment Tonight with Young Guns – I was like this is crazy.
  • Next year Wake me Up Before you GoGo came out and I was hoooked
  • Was one of the first LP’s I bought myself. Yes LP, I remember playing in on my record player
  • Then Careless Whispter came out and cemented Wham! In music. They weren’t just a pop band.
  • Love the Album “Make it Big.” Every song on the album.
  • In 86 the announced the end of w

  • Fantastic – Wham
    • First album I discovered
    • Saw the Bad Boys Video on Entertainment Tonight. I thought it was one of the gayest videos
    • Other hits are Club Tropicana and Wham Rap
    • Didn’t really pay attention to this album
  • Make it Big – Wham
    • This made me take notice of George Micheal
    • Wake Me Up Before you Go Go – I like and thought it was fun but wasn’t hooked. We used to dance to it in Band at our dances
    • Careless Whisper – the song that made me take notice of Wham! And George Michael. I found out in the last few days its as billed as a solo song in the UK and in the US was Wham! Featuring George Micheal. It wasn’t considered a Wham song.
    • The album as given to me for Xmas by a friend along with Tina Turner “Private Dancer”
    • Loved the entire album and would listen to it all the time. Was one of the first CD’s I ever bought.
    • Freedom is still one of the favorite songs of his, to this day.
    • After this album I was hooked
  • Music from the Edge of Heaven – Wham!
    • In 86 Micheal/Ridgely announced they would be ending their partnership known as WHAM!
    • It was devastating, was the first band I ever really loved that broke up.
    • The last album was Music from the Edge of Heaven.
    • I got this via Cassette and played the hell out of it. Until it dies and it was 4 years later that I would get the CD.
    • The first song released was Edge of Heaven – It seemed a joyful album to me.
    • It reminds me of a period of my life where things seemed hopeful.
    • Next up was I’m Your Man. I used to play this loud in the car.
    • The Cassette had the Hot Side and Cool side. Meaning the hot side was fast upbeat music and the cool side was slower songs. It showed his diversity
    • A Different Corner was on the cool side and I don’t think really took off in the US but is a very poignant song. It matched me and my coming out.
    • Last Christmas – this is one of the songs we know him for the most. It’s a bitter sweet Xmas song. It’s not particularly happy when you listen to the lyrics. Many people have covered it and it has become an “official” Christmas song.
  • Wham! The Final –
    • Right after the end of Wham, they released a Greatest hits album. I didn’t get it till 95 when I worked at Blockbuster Music.
  • Faith
    • Right after Wham, he released Faith. I would say this is the biggest album of his career. Especially in the US.
    • I remember they released every song on the album to the radio.
    • First Was Faith – It was a tease for the album. I remember hearing it on the radio and was so happy. I wanted this album now.
    • This album came at a dark time in my life. At 18 I was coming out and under turmoil. I was extremely depressed and these memories are still attached to this album.
    • Next was “I want your sex” I loved this song the same way I loved prince. Because you’re not supposed to listen to it. It caused controversy. I was upset the radio version wasn’t on the album. I later got that version on Ladies and Gentleman. Now this song wouldn’t bat an eye. I’m surprised ATL didn’t ban the album.
    • One more Try – This brings back memories of the 88 Olympics specifically winter. When Debbie Thomas skated to this in the exhibition.
    • The albums were very disjointed to me now. Not because of his talent but because of my memories attached to it and when I listened to it. I’m projecting on it.
  • Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1
    • George was done with being in videos and such so when Listen Without Prejudice came out Freedom ‘90 didn’t have him in it, It had super models in the video. The Juke Box and Leather Jacket from the Faith Video were destroyed. He was breaking with the Past.
    • This was the first album that I didn’t LOVE every song on. It has since had several of the songs I really love
    • The line “Take these Lies and Make them True” rang with me. I was still worried and struggling with being gay.
    • If I remember correctly, Praying for Time was the first single and only had the words in the video.
    • There was to be a Vol 2 that was a dance album, but he didn’t like the songs and scrapped the album.
    • There was supposed to be another album in 91 as well but he didn’t like that either. It was going to be called Trojan something. I have seen a few titles online
    • Looking back on this album it seems that he was going through accepting himself as well.
  • Older
    • Was super excited about this album, first album in 5 years.
    • The first single was Fast Love was up beat and hoped the album would be like this.
    • My favorite off the album is Jesus to Child – loved the slow ballad
    • Next was Star People – preferred the remix over the reg version for a while.
    • This was the first album I didn’t like and didn’t buy.
    • I didn’t buy this till mid-2000’s before it was discontinued
    • Has one song I discovered later – Spinning wheel.
  • Ladies and Gentleman The best of George Micheal
    • Was so excited we got a two-CD greatest hits.
    • Had Knew. you were waiting with Aretha Franklin. One hit from the 80’s I didn’t have.
    • It also gave me hits off Older I didn’t have.
    • I got this as a gift for my birthday.
    • Also contained the five live, where he sang with. Queen and Lisa Stansfield. The LP of 5 songs to celebrate Queen
    • Also included is Outside. His song he released after his arrest for Lewd Conduct in an LA bathroom. The video is HOT
    • The arrest…Most didn’t know he was gay…. riiggghhhttt
  • Music from the Last Century
    • I remember seeing this album at Tower Records
    • It was covered from standards from the 20th Century
    • Brother Can you Spare a Dime, Roxanne, and Feeling Good.
    • The later is my favorite.
  • Patience
    • After a long… Long time since he released an album. It’s 2004, 8 years since Older. It’s the first new music.
    • Very good album. Best song is Amazing.
    • Other songs on the album – John and Elvis are Dead. Flawless, Patience
    • Did he name this because his fans wanted new music?
  • 25 Live
    • The new collection of hits. Came out in 2-3 disc set
    • I bought on iTunes with the three albums and videos, plus advance tix sales.
    • I never got the code to get tix and had to join the Fan club. Apple refunded the price of the album. Now it’s in my account but is wonky.
    • On video was not included Bad Boys. Rumor he didn’t like the video.
    • I also bought the 3 CD set as well so I have them in a non-digital form.
  • December Song
    • The most ironic is 6 years ago I ordered this on Amazon and it came after Xmas
  • White Light
    • Sang this at the Closing Ceremonies at the London 2012 Games.
  • Symphonica
    • The live album. Of sorts. He recorded some of his classic hits with a full orchestra.  He toured Europe but never brought it to the US. I’m buying this now
  • Others
    • Too Funky – Red Hot and Dance
    • As – Mary J. Bilge single was never released in the US until 25 Live – cover of Stevie Wonder
    • If I told you That – Duet with Whitney Houston — For her greatest hits album
    • Five Live – Queen tribute

  • Concert
    • He announced a US Tour in 2008
    • First time in Atlanta since the 80’s
    • I know I had to go and I wouldn’t get another chance
    • No one would go with me, except Todd. We knew it was going to amazing or tragic, there would be no in between
    • Was amazing show – he arrived 55 minutes late
    • The stage was amazing.
    • He was about the music
    • Got a concert program and buttons – need to find the buttons
    • Atlanta didn’t sell out, I got tix in the upper level and we got tix in the 200s. The entire upper level was empty and put up a curtain.
  • Later Years
    • Was reclusive
    • Had health issues – fell out of car
    • Broke up with Kenny Goss, long time Partner, he announced it 2 years after on stage in Europe
    • From what I gather they remained friendly but not much has been said
